CABBAGE BATCH AREA The following names also -o appear _n this report : RP SCULLY, FIDELIIA B . - ( wife of %ricti�nj 135 E1 Nido Ct. , /PO2 : 3Q3 , Diablo , "A :•1523 SCULLY, KARL, DOB: 06/ 10/ 7; v - ; son of victim) 135 E1 Nido Ct. , /POB : 393 , Diablo , CA 94528 On 01/23/93 at approximately 2030 hours RP , FIDELMA SCULLY telephoned the Sheriff ' s Office to report her husband , PHILLIP SCULLY, overdue from a cross-country ski trip in the Cabbage Patch area oft Highway 4 in Calaveras County. I was notified by SGT. WARD REDMAN to respond to the Cottage Springs Ski Resort and meet with the wife of the victim and he (REDMAN ) was going to be calling out the Ebbetts Pass Volunteer Search and Rescue Team. I picked up SGT. STEVE MATHEWS from the Calaveras County Sheriff ' s Office and together we responded to the Cottage Springs Ski Resort and met with MRS . SCULLY at approximately 2150 hours . MRS . SCULLY gave us the physical description and information about 'J , PHILLIP SCULLY by telling us that MR. SCULLY had dropped her and her son oft at the Cottage Springs Ski Resort at approximately 1200 hours on 01/23/93. He was then going to park his vehicle near the Cabbage Patch area and Highway 4 and cross-country ski and return to the Cottage Springs Ski Resort around 1700 hours to pick up MRS . SCULLY and Their son. IIRS . SCULLY described ISR. SCULLY as being in good shape except for a verte- brae back .problem. She stated if he had fallen he could have injured his back and not been able to get up. She described him as being approximatel,, five foot ten, one hundred sixty-eight pounds with dark/gray hair; no facial hair, blue eyes ; clothing was a cream hat, ski pullover type , a beige jacket which we later found out he had not taken but had left it in .his vehicle parked on Highway 4 at Cabbage Patch. He ,had bib type gray pants and a cream turtle neck; blue cross-country shoes , black and red gloves and he was wearing a watch. MRS . He had no supplies or equipment and she was worried for his safety. SGT . MATHEWS and I responded to the Cabbage Patch area ;nd located MR. SCULLY ' S vehicle parked along side the roadway at approximately 2215 hours . At approximately 2250 hours members of the Ebbetts Pass Search and Rescue Team arrived on scene at Cabbage Patch and began setting up base station. At approximately 2310 hours , BRIAN RAWLEY arrived with two snowmobiles . At approximately 2330 hours , SGT . REDMAN and DAVE BARKER arrived with an addi- tional two snowmobiles. At approximately 2400 hours , a team of four search- ers left base camp on snowmobiles in an attempt to locate MR. SCULLY. Mem- bers of this team were ART HASTINGS , BRIAN RAWLEY , .;AC1', SMIT =nd oTE`rL MATHEWS . Below is a list of times and what occurred during the mission at those times . 01/24/93 0015 hours - radio check with the search team loud and clear 0035 hours - search team one half mile in on Cabbage Patch Road taking forest road 7N11A 0035 hours - reauest for CHP helicopter :lade 0100 hours - section 21 in meadow - searchers checking 7Nli 0110 hours - information relayed to search team that 7-he victim ' s ski noies were unusual - that they appeared in appearance to be shaped like a golf/wood with short spikes and a hollow underside with longer spikes on the back and end.. Also at this time Cal Trans , employee ROD TEANY, _eported seeing unusual tracks next to some cross-country skis on a ridge behind the search base . 0110 hours - continued - search team reported returning to search base 'De— cause of an oil light on one of the snowmobiles and to meet with the Cal Trans employee 0130 hours - searcn team in mase 0205 hours - search team of BRIAN RAWLEY, STEVE `!ATHEWS . FIRST. `RIDDLE LOCATION OF OCCURRENCE SCULLY, PHILLIP A. CABBAGE PATCH AREA 0300 hours - search team on forest road 7N09 towar~.:- Camp following possible foot tracks 0325 hours - the victim was found on a side road near Mattley Ridge approx- imately seven miles from Highway 4 . . 0330 hours - all other - -ams and the CHP helicopter cancelled by search base and the search team is returning to base . Upon interviewing MR. SCULLY at the search base he said that he was in good health. The search team had located him before any physical signs of hypo- thermia or frost bite had set in. MR. SCULLY had made himself small cave in the snow and was able to walk around and run in place to keep his circu- lation going and searchers could see no signs of the hypothermia. He appeared to be in good spirits and in good health. MR. SCULLY said that he had skied the area by himself for several hours and then realized that he would not be able to make it back to Highway 4 before it became dark. He said he had started skiing back towards the highway but at approximately 1600 hours he decided to start walking and follow his own ski tracks back out to the road, but he couldn ' t make it so lie stopped and made himself a shelter. The searchers on snowmobiles had searched approximately .. dozen main and side forest roads following numerous sets of cross-country ski tracks and footprints for a total of approximately three and one half to flour hours before locating MR. SCULLY. The conditions of the snow on the forest roads was very poor in most areas . Damage occurred to two of the snowmobiles ; one windshield was cracked then it flipped over on SMITH _end ;r one time there was a collision between the two snowmobiles :which caused damage to the rear end of the snowmobile that 14ATHEWS was driving . The weather conditions were ideal for the search. It ;was ciear but cold, approximately fifteen egrees , which expedited the searchers because hazards to HR. SCULLY being stranded in this area :without toou , shelter �r clothing. 4hen MR. CULLY was located !ie was given a ride %iia snowmobile back to the `:ase camp where lie was reunited with his wife and son. Base camp was secured and cleaned up and a debrief_:ig :ieia -.:>: all search `.eam memi-lers ;ere released . End of report.
