In the Matter of Resolution No. 93/754 Honoring Bob Smith On the Occasion of his Retirement as General Manager of California Delta Newspapers i WHEREAS,Bob Smith started his career in 1952 for the Des Moines Register and Tribune and has continued in this vital field to this day; WHEREAS, he moved to California in 1957 and began his employment with Lesher.Publica- tions in 1960 and has been with the company since then; WHEREAS, during his tenure he has held numerous positions in the company including production manager, circulation manager and business manager; WHEREAS,under his supervision, the Contra Contra Times went from a 20,000 circulation throw-away to an award-winning 100,000 circulation daily in less than twenty years; WHEREAS,in 1985 Bob was named General Manager and Vice-President of California Delta Newspapers, which publishes and Daily Ledger, Post Dispatch and the Brentwood News. He was elected President of the Corporation in 1988; WHEREAS,Bob has shown his commitment to improving the quality of life in our community by developing the the Delta Pride Program; WHEREAS,Bob has improved the health and welfare of numerous people and organizations as a charter board member of the Delta Advocacy Foundation; WHEREAS,Bob's efforts in the community have resulted in countless trees being planted and countless clean-up projects being accomplished and countless children and families being helped; WHEREAS he has also served as a director and president of a number of newspaper associations,including the Western Newspaper Circulation Managers Association and the California Youth Foundation; WHEREAS,he has helped newspapers flourish,employing thousands of people and making a difference in the lives of numerous people and improving the community; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Board of Supervisors hereby com- mends Bob Smith for his many years of valuable service to the community and his lasting impact on improving Contra Costa County and extends heartiest congratulations upon his retirement.
