GROUNDS RESOURCE CENTER ATTENDANT - PROJECT
DEFINITION:
Under supervision performs a variety of manual activities in support of the
Grounds Resource Center and the Grounds Services Division; and performs related
work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Grounds Resource Center Attendant is distinguished from Work Program Crew Leaden
by its requirement for knowledge of gardening tasks_ It is further distinguished
from Gardener by its requirement to. operate recycling- equipment. Supervision is
received from the Grounds Maintenance Manager in the General Services Department.
Incumbents in this class are exempt from the classified service and work in State
and Federally funded project positions administered by Contra Costa County,
TYPICAL TASKS:
- Oversees work programparticiparits at the Resource .Center;
- Operates forklift, pallet jack, baler, shredder and other machinery;
- Receives, stores, issues and maintains tools, equipment and supplies;
- Prepares and maintains records related to work programs including inventory and
surplus material records;
- Operates radio and telephone;
- May monitor County pool vehicle usage, including monitoring fuel supplies and
record keeping;
- May water, water, weed, cultivate and trim around grounds areas;
- May plan, transplant, fertilize and prune shrubs;
- May perform minor maintenance to hoses, hand tools, sprinkler and irrigation
systems;
- May operate power equipment and tools used in gardening/groundskeeping.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: '
License Required: Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License, Class C.
Education: Possession . of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency, or high
school proficiency certificate.
Background Requirement: ;'Must pass a background investigation necessary to handle
confidential documents.
Experience: . One year of'full-time, or its equivalent, experience as a Gardener or
Groundskeeper in a commercial , industrial , or public agency, performing the full
range of grounds maintenance tasks.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: .
Knowledge of operation, safe work practices and procedures pertaining to grounds
maintenance and gardening; knowledge of soil conditioning and requirements;
knowledge of watering requirements for lawns, trees, shrubs and ornamental- plants
grown in this area; knowledge of operation of grounds maintenance and recycling
equipment; ability to organize= work, including overseeing- work performed by work
program participants; ability to learn operations, safety practices and procedures
pertaining to recycling; ability to order and maintain supplies; ability . to
perform- manual work, which may include, climbing ladders and lifting over 50
pounds; ability to perform arithmetic calculations; ability to write and complete
report and forms such as Accident Reports; ability to communicate and to work
effectively with individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds; ability to
understand and follow oral and written instructions.

WORK PROGRAM CREW LEADER I.I
DEFINITION:
Under supervision assigns directs and instructs County Work Program participants
performing manual tasks at a variety of. worksites.; and performs other work as
required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Incumbents in this class report to the Grounds Maintenance Manager and are
responsible for providing lead direction to Work Program participants in various
locations within the County. Incumbents in these positions are responsible for
transporting participants to and from work sites.
This class is distinguished from Work Program Crew Leader I - Project in that the
latter is assigned less complex assignments and smaller crews.
TYPICAL TASKS:
- Instructs Work Program participants in the proper use of tools and equipment;
- Assigns Work Program participants to various tasks, including weed and fire
abatement, litter control , brush clearing and other special projects;
- Reviews and keeps daily records of participants work performance;
- Provides the County Social Service Department with program and work performance
information;
- Provides worker transportation, by means of a County vehicle, to and from job
sites;
- Assists the Grounds Maintenance Manager in planning future work assignments;
- Takes emergency measures to respond to injured Work Program participants such as
calling or medical aide and/or transporting injured person(s) to a medical
... •facility;
- Performs other selected work assignments a part of the Grounds Maintenance
Division in the absence of responsibility to a Work Program Crew.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
License Required: Possession of a valid Class B California Motor Vehicle
Operator's License.
Experience: Two years ,of full-time or its equivalent experience in either field
maintenance activities - or providing lead direction to a work crew performing
manual labor activities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the planting, pruning and general maintenance of grounds; good
knowledge of safety practices and procedures as pertains to work done by the
crews; knowledge of efficient methods of weeding and clearing brush; ability to
plan and estimate projects and to provide lead direction to Work Program crews
doing brush, weed, litter and other maintenance activities;. ability to effectively
lead a group of Work Program participants who have a wide. variety of cultural
backgrounds; ability to operate grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment;
ability to train participants in using proper safety procedures and performing
work activities ability to keep accurate records and prepare routine written
reports.
