IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
OF
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
In the Matter of Declaring )
October 17-25, 1992, WORLD ) RESOLUTION NO. 92/ 685
RAINFOREST WEER in Contra )
Costa County )
I
October 1992 marks the sixth annual celebration of World Rainforest
Week. A broad spectrum of individuals and groups support and
participate in World Rainforest Week, including human rights,
consumer action, enviroimental, religious, and labor groups.
The tropical forests are important to maintaining climatic balance
for the entire world and provide the sole source of refuge for
numerous endangered species. Over half of the Earth's species of
plants and animals ands over 1000 indigenous tribes populate the
rainforests.
The National Academy of Sciences estimates that every minute of
every day an additiona!1 150 acres of rainforest are destroyed or
degraded resulting in a forest the size of the State of
Pennsylvania being destroyed each year. Once the rainforests are
destroyed, reforestation cannot restore extinct species and the
loss of natural diversity. If the clearing of the rainforests is
not stopped, all the world rainforests will be destroyed in our
lifetime.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
declares the week of 'October 17-25 as WORLD RAINFOREST WEER in
Contra Costa County and encourages all residents to take an
interest in the plight of our world' s rainforests and to take
action to preserve this important resource.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON bctober 13 , 1992, by a unanimous vote of the
Board members present.
