Brother Mel Anderson has been President of St. Mary's College since
1969. He has spent the past 23 years providing St. Mary's students
with the best possible education and is now being honored by the
Dominican Religious Order with the prestigious Alemany Award for
his dedication to higher education.
Brother Mel has made many improvements to St. Mary's College. In
1970, women first began to be admitted; he was able to eliminate a
$1.3 million deficit; the student body has tripled; and new
programs have been added, including Extended Education, the School
of Graduate Business, and other graduate programs.
Brother Mel is not only a pillar within educational circles, he is
a well-respected citizen of Contra Costa County too. In 1988, he
was honored for his many contributions to the community by being
inducted into the Contra Costa County Citizens' Hall of Fame.
St. Mary's students both past and present and the citizens of the
county are fortunate to have benefitted from Brother Mel's love of
and commitment to education and community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
declares October 22, 1992, as BROTHER MEL ANDERSON DAY in Contra
Costa County in honor of his selection for the Alemany Award.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON October 13, 1992, by a unanimous vote of the
Board members present.
