RECOMMENDATIONS
Authorize letter from the Board of Supervisors under the Chair' s
signature to Caltrans Division of Rail requesting their formal
response to the Crockett Chamber of Commerce' s petition to
establish rail passenger in the Town of Crockett.

BACKGROUND/REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS
On April 2 , 1992 , the Crockett Chamber of Commerce submitted a
5, 000 signature petition to Caltrans Division of Rail requesting
consideration of an AMTRAK train stop in Crockett. Prior to this
petition drive the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors adopted
a resolution on February 11, 1992 in support of the community's
efforts establish train service in Crockett (Resolution 92/81) . To
date, Caltrans Division of Rail has not formally responded to
Crockett' s petition. The Transportation Committee recommends that
a letter under the Chair of the Board of Supervisors be submitted
to Caltrans Division of Rail requesting their formal response to
the petition and, in addition, an explanation of the steps
communities must undertake to establish r:a4j passenger service (see
attached letter labeled as Exhibit A) .

Dear Ms. McKim:
On April 2, 1992, residents of the Town of Crockett and Northwest Contra Costa submitted a 5,000
signature petition to Caltrans Division of Rail requesting consideration of an AMTRAK train stop
in Crockett. Prior to this petition drive the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors adopted a
resolution in support of the community's efforts to establish train service in Crockett.See attachments.
As you might be aware, Crockett was historically once a hub for passenger rail service to residents
in northwest Contra Costa County. Now with the revival of passenger rail service provided by the
CAPITOLS and other AMTRAK services and considering the traffic congestion on I-80, a re-
introduction of train service may have real merits.
On behalf of the residents of Crockett and northwest Contra Costa County, the Contra Costa County
Board of Supervisors requests that Caltrans Division of Rail provide a formal response to the petition
for train service. We are particularly interested in learning if a train station in Crockett(or in another
location in northwest Contra Costa County, such as the nearby Town of Rodeo) is viable and what
steps we, along with other agencies, need to undertake for re-introducing train service to Crockett.
Should you have any question or concerns regarding this request, please contact Mr. Patrick Roche,
Senior Transportation Planner, Community Development Department, at (510) 646-2131.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
Respectfully yours,
Sunne McPeak, Chair
Board of Supervisors

PETITION CONCERNING RAIL SERVICE TO CROCKETT, CALIFORNIA
Sponsored by the Crockett Chamber of Commerce
We,the undersigned, encourage Amtrak and the California State Transportation Department to
open, service and staff the train station in Crockett,California.
A station in Crockett would provide the West County with a direct BART connection. A station in
Crockett would provice a more accessible and efficient transfer with the growing population in the
North Bay. The opening of a Crockett station is consistent with the State's overall transportation
goals for alleviating traffic congestion in°the Bay Area, and specifically in the I-80 corridor.
