SUBJECT: Designation of Point Pinole as a State Point of Historic Interest
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATIONS) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATIONS
Authorize the Chair of the Board of Supervisors to sign a letter to
the East Bay Regional Park District supporting the concept of Point
Pinole Regional Shoreline Park to be designated as a State Point of
Historic Interest.
FISCAL IMPACT
None.
BACKGROUND/REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS
The General Manager of the East Bay Regional Park District wrote
the Board on December 16, 1992 requesting the County to support the
District on their request to the State to designate the Point
Pinole Regional Shoreline Park as a State Point of Historical
Interest. Point Pinole was historically used as granite powder
works from 1882 to 1906. Subsequently, Giant Powder and Atlas
Powder Works were established. Giant Powder was the first U.S.
manufacturing plant authorized to manufacture TNT under a license
from Albert Nobel. Staff recommends the Chair be authorized to
sign the attached letter in support of this request.
