SUBJECT: RADAR AT BUCHANAN FIELD AIRPORT
SPECIFIC REQUESTS)OR RECONIIAMDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I. Recommended Action:
AUTHORIZE the Chair of the Board of Supervisors to solicit support from appropriate California
Congressmen and Senators to get radar at Buchanan Field Airport.
II. Financial Impact:
None on the County.
III. Reasons for Recommendations and Background:
In December of 1986, an accident occurred at Sun Valley Mall that was weather related.
Subsequent to that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) included in their findings
that radar could have had some influence on the out come of the accident. Subsequently,
Supervisor Sunne McPeak solicited assistance from Congressman Miller, Congressman Mineta,
and then Senator Wilson (copies attached).
The Airport was placed upon the FAA list for radar and we were advised that radar could be
anticipated in 1991 or 1992. Subsequently the FAA did surveys at the Airport including the siting
of an antenna to receive radar information from Mt. Tamalpais.

RADAR AT BUCHANAN FIELD AIRPORT
January 14, 1992
Page TWO
We have been advised that because of complications of receiving the radar transmission
information from Mt. Tamalpais that the FAA has eliminated Buchanan Field Airport from its list
of airports to receive radar.
The Public Works Director suggests that once again the Board of Supervisors contact California
Congressmen and Senators to enlist their aid in getting radar scheduled for Buchanan Field
Airport.
