the Twentieth Anniversary of the) RESOLUTION NO.92/601

WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit and
its 71 mile, 34 station rail network celebrates its 20th birthday
on September 11, 1992, and
WHEREAS, the BART system is the acknowledged pioneer in
the resurgence of rail systems across the United States, having
ended a 60 year decline in the building of such systems in 1962,
,and
WHEREAS, the residents of Alameda, Contra Costa and San
Francisco Counties in 1962 taxed their homes and property to
finance BART, stemming the proliferation of highways and freeways
that threatened the beloved environment of the San Francisco Bay
region, and
WHEREAS, the three-county BART District again has
pledged its support of expanding the BART system, committing 'some
$2 billion in bond funds and other revenue sources to extend rails
and build another 12 stations on both sides of the Bay, and
WHEREAS, BART trains providing a quarter of a million
passenger trips per day are the dominant thread in the transpor-
tation fabric of the region, enhancing air quality and allowing
for orderly development around its stations,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa
County Board of Supervisors raises its collective voice in a 20th
birthday salutation to the ever expanding BART system, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County
Board of Supervisors does hereby take public cognizance of the
incalculable contributions BART has made to the furtherance of
public mass transportation.
PASSED on September 8, 1992 by unanimous vote of the
Board members present.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and
correct copy of an action entered on the minutes of said Board of
Supervisors on the date aforesaid.
