HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 12151992 - 1.33 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Recognizing ) The Completion of ) Resolution No.: 9 2/8 3 3 The American Discovery Trail ) WHEREAS The American Discovery Trail was blazed across the country on September 12, 1992, with a celebration involving hikers along each segment of the trail; and WHEREAS The American Discovery Trail was first scouted and mapped by a team of three hikers who started in California in June, 1990, ending up in Delaware in July, 1991, and WHEREAS The American Discovery Trail crosses thirteen states and the District of Columbia, and is the Nation's first coast-to-coast scenic and recreational trail; and WHEREAS The American Discovery Trail intersects three major north to south American trails, the Pacific Coast Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Appalachian Trail as it traverses the entire United States from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean; and WHEREAS The American Discovery Trail spans 4,920 miles of the United States most beautiful terrain from oceans to deserts to cities to windswept passes to rolling plains to cool forests to cities to the ocean again; and WHEREAS The American Discovery Trail traverses Contra Costa County from the San Pablo and Briones Reservoirs to Walnut Creek through the Acalanes Ridge and Shell Ridge Open Spaces, ascends Mount Diablo, passes through Clayton and the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, and departs the County at Antioch by crossing over the Sacramento River; and WHEREAS The American Discovery Trail and its California segment were publicized and its inauguration coordinated by Orinda resident, runner and hiker, John Fazel. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa, California, hereby CONGRATULATES John Fazel and all the visionary Americans who worked so effectively to make the American Discovery Trail a reality, COMMENDS the sponsoring lawmakers and organizations who made connection of the route possible and EXTENDS to all citizens of this County and our country its earnest wish that the trail be walked by our citizens and that its beauties and physical and spiritual refreshment be enjoyed by all.
