Status Report -
December 2, 1992
Approved by the Board of Supervisors to promote wildflower
plantings in Contra Costa County, the following is a status
report on this effort.
The simplest way to obtain necessary permits to plant wildflower
seeds along the I-680 corridor is to participate in Caltrans'
Adopt-a-Highway program. Shell Oil has offered to be the sponsor
and to put up monies for wildflower seeds to be planted from the
Benicia Bridge south to Pacheco Boulevard. Landfill mitigation
funds to match those monies donated by Shell or other community
interests could also be approved . by the Board of Supervisors.
Poppies and Lupine (both California native wildflowers) have been
selected to create a scenic "gateway" as drivers enter Contra
Costa County from the Benicia Bridge. We are aiming to commence
with the planting at the end of January or beginning of February,
1993 . Volunteers will be utilized to prepare the soil and to
plant the seed. Another idea is to employ the assistance of GA
Work Furlough participants.
A meeting between Contra Costa County, Shell Oil, and East Bay
Regional Park District is being set at the beginning of January
to work out the details.
