HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 11191991 - 1.91 r IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of ) Supporting Earthquake ) RESOLUTION NO. 91/ 762 Fault Research in the ) East Bay Area ) WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay Area has experienced devastating earthquakes, notably the Great Quake of 1906 and the Loma Prieta Quake of 1989, and WHEREAS, seismic activity will continue to occur within the Bay Area and the U.S. Geological Survey has predicted a sixty-six percent, chance of a major quake hitting this area within the next thirty years, and WHEREAS, the East Bay Area faces the serious threat of a major earthquake occurring along the Hayward Fault, and WHEREAS, increased knowledge of the location and nature of earthquake fault lines will allow communities to take appropriate mitigation and preparedness steps, and WHEREAS, the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of California at Berkeley, the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and Stanford University have jointly undertaken a study of the earthquake faults which lie beneath the floor of San Francisco Bay.
