BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
OF
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY,CALIFORNIA
IN THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO. 91/672
Declaring October 19,1991,as
"Mount Diablo Autumn Classic Day"
in Contra Costa County
WHEREAS,Mount Diablo has been an important part of Contra Costa's history and has served as a spiritual and physical
beacon for people and as been a source of abundant natural resources;
WHEREAS,this singular ecological island of over 20,000 acres contains over 600 species of plants(16 rare or endangered),
more than 250 species of fish,amphibians,reptiles,birds and mammals which inhabit its flanks;and
WHEREAS,the Mt.Diablo Interpretive Association has called upon us to set aside as a special day the 19th of October,
1991,to singularly honor Mount Diablo at the first"Diablo Autumn Classic,"a sporting and interpretive event to benefit Mount
Diablo State Park;
WHEREAS,the Classic is sponsored by the Mount Diablo Interpretive Association,a volunteer,non-profit organization,
and cooperates with the California Department of Parks and Recreation to increase the public's understanding and promotes the
enlightened use of Mount Diablo;
WHEREAS,net proceeds from this event will be used to cover a portion of the operating costs of the new Summit Visitor
Center,as well as to finance interpretive programs,exhibits,maps,an other publications and educational programs highlighting the
natural and cultural history of the state park;
WHEREAS, interesting exhibits and several activities,including nature and natural history hikes, equestrian events,a
triathlon,musical entertainment and other feature events,are scheduled which will be of interest to all persons of all ages;
WHEREAS,Contra Costa County has strongly supported the acquisition of additional lands to the Mount Diablo State
Park,a tremendous natural resource set aside for the public's enjoyment;
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CONTRA COSTA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS does
hereby declare Saturday,October 19,1991,as"Mount Diablo Autumn Classic Day"and invites the community to participate in any
of the wide variety of activities available that day and join in honoring Mount Diablo,the majestic centerpiece to the natural beauty
of Contra Costa County.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board commends the Mount Diablo Interpretive Association for its sponsorship
of the"Mount Diablo Autumn Classic"promoting public awareness of the cultural and natural history of Mount Diablo and for their
ongoing efforts to help park visitors discover new and more exciting ways to observe and learn about this great natural beauty.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 15th day of October,1991.
