In the Matter of Declaring the )
week of October 19-26, 1991 as ) ! Resolution No. : 91/651
World Rain Forest Week j
WHEREAS, the Rain Forest Action. Network, an international
grassroots organization, is celebrating the 5th Annual
Celebration of World Rain Forest Week; and
WHEREAS, the Rain Forest Action Network represents a broad
spectrum of people and organizations including human rights,,
consumer action, environmental, religious and labor groups;
and
WHEREAS, the tropical rain forests are an important source
of oxygen for the entire world; and
WHEREAS, the tropical rain forests provide the sole source
of refuge for numerous endangered species; and
WHEREAS, approximately 10 million different species of
plants and animals and over 1000 indigenous tribes populate
the rain forests; and
WHEREAS, the National Academy of Sciences estimates that
every minute of every day an additional 75 to 100 acres of
rain forest are destroyed or degraded resulting in the loss
of rain forest each year the size of the state of
Pennsylvania; .. and
WHEREAS, once the rain forests are destroyed, they cannot be
replanted successfully; and
WHEREAS, if the clearing of the rain forests is not stopped,
all of- the world's rain forests will be destroyed in our
lifetime;
NOW,\ THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
of Contra Costa County hereby declares the Week of October
19-26, 1991 as World Rain Forest Week in Contra Costa
County.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of
Contra Costa County encourages all residents of the county
to take an interest in the plight of our world's rain
forests and to take action to preserve this important world
resource.
PASSED and ADOPTED this eighth day of October, 1991, by the
unanimous vote of the Board members present.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct

Supervisors on the date aforesaid.
