SUBJECT: SECONDARY FENCING AT THE MARSH CREEK FACILITY
SPECIFIC REOUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION•
Accept the report and remove this item as a referral to the
Finance Committee.
BACKGROUND:
The Sheriff ' s . Department has explored with various fencing
companies the cost of providing additional fencing. Factoring in
General Services design and overhead costs, it is the
Department' s estimate that such fencing would cost approximately
$150, 000-$200,000 .
There are currently approximately 560 inmates in the facility,
many of whom are pre-trial prisoners. Once the West County jail
is opened, this population will drop dramatically and Marsh Creek
will revert to its previous status as a sentenced facility. For
such a facility, additional fencing is not required.
As an interim security measure pending completion of the West
County jail, the Sheriff has instituted additional security
programs at Marsh Creek in terms of staff orientation and
training and additional perimeter patrols, including the use of
dogs. Given this stepped-up security, this Office does not
recommend additional fencing at the facility.
