Spooner, Contracts AdministratCOO Costa DATE: February 4, 1991 County SUBJECT: Approval of Novation Contract #26-177-5 with CuraCare SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve and authorize the Chair to execute on behalf of the County, Novation Contract #26-177-5 with CuraCare, effective September 1, 1990 through August 31, 1991, in the amount of $60, 000, for provision of ultrasound services at Merrithew Memorial Hospital and Clinics. This document includes provision for a six-month automatic extension through February 29, 1992 , with a payment limit of $30, 000 during the extension period. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Funding for this service is included in the Department' s FY 1990-91 Enterprise I Budget. As appropriate, patients and/or third-party payors will be billed for services. III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND: On October 31, 1989 , the Board approved Novation Contract #26-177-2 , with Curacare effective September 1, 1989 through August 31, 1990 (with provision for a six-month automatic extension through February 28, 1991) for ultrasound services for patients at Merrithew Memorial Hospital and Clinics. Contract Amendment Agreements #26-177-3 and #26-177-4 were approved by the Board on February 6, 1990 and June 26, 1990, respectively. Approval of Novation Contract #26-177-5 will allow the Contractor to continue providing ultrasound services through August 31, 1991. This Contractor provides a number of non-invasive Doppler diagnostic cardiovascular studies which are not performed by Merrithew Memorial Hospital staff because it would not be cost effective for the County to purchase the necessary state-of-the-art equipment. Doppler technology is continually evolving and equipment is quickly outdated. Because this is a rapidly developing field, the list of procedures included in the contract is not exhaustive, and physicians request new procedures as the technology improves.
