citizens of Contra Costa County implement and endorse the Designated Driver Program.
Further, that the Board encourage all individuals to support this endeavor by designating one
persor;in theirsocial groupto drive all others home thereby reducing the numberof deaths and
injuries1hat occur as a result of drinking and driving. We are therefore requesting that the
Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County approve a resolution implementing the
Designated Driver Program in Contra Costa County.
Background
The Designated Driver Program was established as a means of reducing the number of deaths
and injuries that occur each year as a result of drinking and driving. To implement the program
the bar/restaurant owner must agree to provide free non-alcoholic beverages to the Desig-
nated Driver in a group of people. The Designated Driver is given a pin to wear which notifies
the waiter/waitress that he/she is the one who will be responsible for driving the other members
of the group home. Should at any time, the Designated Driver begin to drink alcoholic
beverages, the establishment may charge the individual for all non-alcoholic drinks that were i
provided that evening.
