HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 12031991 - 1.72 -72 THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on 1 AAS by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Fanden, Schroder , McPeak, Torlakson, Powers NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None SUBJECT: Designated Driver Program RESOLUTION NO: 131/772 WHEREAS, alcohol related traffic accidents kill about 24,000 Americans every year and seriously injure more than 560,000 others; and WHEREAS,in California each year between 325,000 and 350,000 people who THINK they are sober are arrested for driving under the influence; and WHEREAS,Designated Drivers are neededto ensure that only sober drivers get behindthe wheel of a motor vehicle; and WHE REAS,they do this by being the person in agroup who abstains from drinking alcoholic beverages and agrees to drive the others safely to their destination; and WHEREAS, friends can take turns being Designated Drivers, or they can recruit a non- drinker; and WHEREAS, Designated Drivers WILL prevent collisions and save lives; and WHEREAS,whether at home orat office parties,on winerytours or in bars and restaurants, there are advantages to being a Designated Driver; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa does hereby support the Designated Driver Program, and encourages its restaurant/bar owners to participate in the implementation of the Designated Driver Program by providing non-alcoholic beverages to the non-drinking member of the group at no charge and also encourage citizens to participate in the Designated Driver Program by not drinking and driving, but rather coordinate one member of your group to act as the Designated Driver and refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages in an effort to reduce deaths and injuries on our roadways. hereby certify that this is a true and correct copy of an action taken and entered on the minutes of the Board of Supervi rss A�on the dat shown. Further, that the Board encourage all individuals to support this endeavor by designating one persor;in theirsocial groupto drive all others home thereby reducing the numberof deaths and injuries1hat occur as a result of drinking and driving. We are therefore requesting that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County approve a resolution implementing the Designated Driver Program in Contra Costa County. Background The Designated Driver Program was established as a means of reducing the number of deaths and injuries that occur each year as a result of drinking and driving. To implement the program the bar/restaurant owner must agree to provide free non-alcoholic beverages to the Desig- nated Driver in a group of people. The Designated Driver is given a pin to wear which notifies the waiter/waitress that he/she is the one who will be responsible for driving the other members of the group home. Should at any time, the Designated Driver begin to drink alcoholic beverages,the establishment may charge the individual for all non-alcoholic drinks that were i provided that evening.
