IN THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO: 91/808
Commending Save ML Diablo on the
occasion of their 20th Anniversary
WHEREAS,Save Mount Diablo, a Contra Costa land trust and citizens group,was formed on
December 7, 1971 with the express purpose of preserving the scenic beauty and ecological diversity of
Mount Diablo, the visual centerpiece of Contra Costa County and one of the most important visual,
biological, and recreational open space resources in the Bay Area; providing additional recreational space
for our rapidly expanding population, and protecting the quality of life in our Bay Area for current and
future generations, and;
WHEREAS,Save Mount Diablo has four major goals,which are to: (1) promote the preservation of
open space on and around Mount Diablo, (2) raise funds privately for additional land acquisition to
expand Mount Diablo State Park and other parks on and around Mount Diablo, (3) inform the public
about the ecological and recreational values of the mountain, and(4)work with the California State Park
Commission, the State Department of Parks and Recreation, and regional, County, and local agencies to
realize these objectives, and;
WHEREAS,Save Mount Diablo has pursued these goals by working with all segments of the
community by holding fundraising and educational campaigns and events including the annual"April on
the Mountain"series of hikes ;and interpretive events,by working for the passage of state and local park
bond acts for land acquisition;'and by working with its 4,000 members to inform decision makers about the
mountain's values,and;
WHEREAS,in 1971 only 7,000 acres of Mount Diablo, the upper portions of the main peak and the
area stretching down Southgate Road to Rock City,was preserved; and twenty years later in 1991 the
group has enjoyed great success in these objectives, expanding the State Park alone to more than 19,000
acres, aiding in the creation of three regional parks-Diablo Foothills,Morgan Territory, and Black Dia-
mond Mines-and city open spaces in Walnut.Creek, Concord, and Clayton, and;
WHF.RF.AS,Save Mount Diablo has aided in the connection of many of these local open spaces
with the State Park, as in the case of the groups 1989 purchase of the 631-acre Morgan Ranch in apublic
fundraising campaign which connected Mount Diablo State Park with Morgan Territory Regional Park,
preserving trail and wildlife corridors, such that the public may now hike, cycle, run or ride more than 30
miles from Central Contra Costa County through preserved open space to the parklands on Diablo's
eastern side, and;
WHEIREAS,Save Mount Diablo created the Mount Diablo Restoration Project to protect the
mountains biodiversity by reintroducing and expanding the populations of rare and threatened species
such as the endangered peregrine falcon, and;
WHEREAS,Save Mount Diablo continues to expand its activities in order to further preserve open
space lands on Mount Diablo and has just received a Take Pride in California award from the State of
California recognizing its conscientiousness and dedicated service, and qualifying the group for considera-
tion in the"Take Pride in America"awards process, and;
WHEREAS,Save Mount Diablo is now celebrating its 20th Anniversary;
NOW,THEREFORE,9IBE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CONTRA COSTA COUNTY BOARD
OF SUPERVISORS does hereby commend Save Mount Diablo on their commitment and achievements
toward the preservation of Mount Diablo and congratulates Save Mount Diablo on the occasion of their
20th Anniversary,
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 10th day of December, 1991.
