the Week of October.. 15-21 as:
"East Bay Breast Cancer Awareness Week" ) Reso,lutio,n 90/623
WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most -common, form, of cancer affecting women
in the United States, striking about 135,000 women each year; and
WHEREAS, understanding personal risk,• utilizing mammography and clinical
examination as well as practicing 'breast self-examination can reduce
deaths- from this` disease; and
WHEREAS,, one` in ten women-wil.l develop breast cancer at some time during
thei r-..:1 i ves; and
WHEREAS, ;the National Cancer Institute has `named October as National
Breast Cancer`Awareness Month., and the Northern California Cancer Center
- with assistance from_.the Alameda County Cancer League, American
:.Associatio"n:. of Retired Persons, the American Association of University
Women, the American Cancer.: Society; Bay Area Tumor Institute, Diablo
Valley Radiology Medical Group, John Muir Medical Center`, Junior League
of Oakland-East Bay, Longs Drugs, Mt: Diablo Medical Center-, Oakland
Cancer Control -Program, San Ramon Valley Imaging Center, Wellness
Community and . the Women's Cancer Resource ' Center is offering two
public forums on -breast cancer` in the fast_ Bay. on October - 16 in.
Oakland and on, October . 20 in San Ramon. ..to help East ' Bay women
understand. their :.risks and options, and to learn more about the early
detection of breast cancer;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,, that , the Contra Costa County.- Board of
Supervisors commends and supports these public education forums in our
communities and :wants our citizens to be aware of these opportunities;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Contra Costa County Board'. of
Supervi'sors -proclaims the week .of October 15 October.. 21 as "East Bay
Breast Cancer Awareness Week"` and to promote information about these
public education forums•. and other., sources of..breast. cancer, information
to its citizens: ;
