BACKGROUND: Because of the reduction of the ozone layer, it is necessary for each and everyone of us to participate in its preservation by avoiding the use of products that contribute to this destruction. The recent U.S. District Court decision, by Judge Henderson ordering the ARB to reduce emissions from consumer solvents by four tons per day is mandated by the EPA approved 1982 Bay Area Air Quality Plan. The Environmental Affairs Committee would review methods of creating shopper awareness to avoid purchasing consumer solvents such as air fresheners, deodorants, disinfectants, aerosol paints, household cleaners, and hairspray, that when used, release reactive organic compounds or ozone precursors into the air. They would also consider the development of an awareness program to encourage purchase of products with minimal and environmentally sound packaging.
