BACKGROUND:
On January 16, 1990 the Board of Supervisors referred to our Committee three vacancies which exist on the Human
Relations Commission, along with the ranking which had been submitted to the Board by the Human Relations
Commission.
On January 22, 1990 our Committee met with the Chair of the Commission and reviewed the rankings which had
been submitted by the Commission, along with an additional application which had been submitted after the
Commission had completed its rankings. We carefully reviewed the applications in an effort to maintain the
geographical balance of the Commission and in an effort to reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the County. We
have, therefore, recommended appointing the Commission's first ranked candidate, a black woman from West
County. We have also recommended appointing a hispanic man from West County and a hispanic woman from East
County.
We are still concerned that we do not have a sufficient pool of interested hispanic candidates to insure full
representation from the hispanic community. We are, therefore, suggesting that additional recruiting be undertaken
through the major hispanic organizations in the County. In this way, we hope to develop a pool of interested
candidates who will be available to fill future vacancies as they may occur.
