A PORTION OF THE $2.72 MILLION RECEIVED IN THE UNOCAL
SUBJECT: SUIT SHOULD' BE GIVEN TO RESTORE THE WETLANDS IN RODEO
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Board of Supervisors authorize the Chair of the
Board to send a letter to Martin Rosen, President, Trust for
Public Land, requesting a portion of the $2.72 million
received from the UNOCAL settlement be designated for the
restoration and preservation of the Rodeo wetlands.
BACKGROUND:
Unocal Corp. has agreed to pay an unprecedented penalty to
settle two lawsuits accusing it of dumping untreated waste
water from its Rodeo refinery into San Pablo Bay.
The largest chunk - $2 .72 million - will go to the Trust for
Public Land, a San Francisco-based nonprofit group that has
helped preserve wetlands in Solano County and Point Reyes.
Three state water agencies, including the regional water
board, will share $500,000 to help fight pollution.
The remaining $1 million will help finance federal
Environmental Protection Agency studies to locate an
offshore site for disposing of harbor and channel dredge
spoils.
