HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 02271990 - S.10 TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS FROM: Supervisor Nancy Fanden Contra Costa February 27, 1990 DATE: @ C"rity A PORTION OF THE $2.72 MILLION RECEIVED IN THE UNOCAL SUBJECT: SUIT SHOULD' BE GIVEN TO RESTORE THE WETLANDS IN RODEO SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of Supervisors authorize the Chair of the Board to send a letter to Martin Rosen, President, Trust for Public Land, requesting a portion of the $2.72 million received from the UNOCAL settlement be designated for the restoration and preservation of the Rodeo wetlands. BACKGROUND: Unocal Corp. has agreed to pay an unprecedented penalty to settle two lawsuits accusing it of dumping untreated waste water from its Rodeo refinery into San Pablo Bay. The largest chunk - $2 .72 million - will go to the Trust for Public Land, a San Francisco-based nonprofit group that has helped preserve wetlands in Solano County and Point Reyes. Three state water agencies, including the regional water board, will share $500,000 to help fight pollution. The remaining $1 million will help finance federal Environmental Protection Agency studies to locate an offshore site for disposing of harbor and channel dredge spoils. Marrinan, 411 San Pablo Avenue, Rodeo, commented on the problem to the Rodeo community. The Board approved the recommendation of Supervisor Fanden. In addition the Board requested County Counsel and the Water Committee to review establishment of a Policy relative to litigation on environmental issues.
