Approve and authorize the Chairman to execute on behalf of the
County a contract with Alan Tafapolsky in the amount of $9,600
for the period December 1, 1989 - October 31, 1990 for the
purpose of conducting dispute resolution training for 72 selected
community leaders and public officials. The contract is funded
with a grant from the Dispute Resolution Program. No County
General Funds are involved.
BACKGROUND-
One of the projects on which the Human Relations Commission has
been working for some time is to provide a mechanism whereby
racially oriented disputes in the community can be handled in an
appropriate and non-threatening manner. One such mechanism is to
establish a pool of trained individuals in the community who can
be provided training in dispute resolution and to whom disputes
can be referred for possible resolution.
The Human Relations Commission has applied for funds from the
Criminal Justice Agency' s Dispute Resolution Program and has been
granted $11 , 300 for this purpose. Most of these funds will be
used to hire an outside consultant who can evaluate the types of
bias-related conflicts which are occurring in the County,
identify and recruit 72 community leaders and public officials
who are willing to participate in crisis intervention, mediation
and negotiation training, design and conduct three three-day
sessions of dispute resolution training ( 24 participants at each
