"Woody" ) Smith' s retirement from the ) Walnut Creek Police Department) RESOLUTION NO. 90/ 783 WHEREAS, Sergeant Sherwood J. "Woody" Smith has devoted over twenty- four years to preserving the safety of the citizens of Walnut Creek through his work on the Walnut Creek Police Department and will be retiring on December 31, 1990, in order to pursue a career in private investigations and spend more time with his family; and WHEREAS, Sergeant Smith is a native of Contra Costa County and cur- rently resides in Walnut Creek where he and his wife, Judy, raised their son and daughter;' and WHEREAS, in 1970, Sherwood Smith received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration from John F. Kennedy University; and WHEREAS, through the years, Sergeant Smith has been active in a wide variety of community affairs and has served as a member of the Crime Prevention Commission of Contra Costa County; and WHEREAS, Sherwood Smith has proved himself an exemplary officer and has received numerous commendations including The Internal Revenue Ser- vice' s Regional Commissioner's Award and a commendation by the patrol team under his command for outstanding leadership; and WHEREAS, in the line of duty, Sergeant Smith has risked his own life and safety on many occasions in order to protect the life and safety of others; and WHEREAS, Sherwood Smith has served with the Walnut Creek Police Department in various capacities throughout the years and, in March of 1971, he became Walnut Creek' s first Crime Prevention Officer and was, therefore, charged with the duties of working with Walnut Creek community members and business owners to make the city a safe and crime-free place to live and work; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County would like to COMMEND Sergeant Sherwood 'J. "Woody" Smith for his exemplary work for the Walnut Creek Police Department, EXPRESS sincere appreciation for his involvement in community affairs and WISH him good health, good fortune and continued happiness in all his future endeavors. Passed and adopted by unanimous vote of the Board members present on this 11th day of December.
