SUBJECT: CISCO SURVEY
SPECIFIC REOUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDED ACTION
The Board of Supervisors join the Surgeon General, Antonia Novello, the
National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency and others in requesting
that the Canadaigua Wine Company remove this beverage from the stores in
this County.

None.
REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONIBACKGROUND
Cisco is a fortified wine beverage which is produced by the Cisco Wine
Company, Edison, California and the Canadaigua Wine Company, Buffalo,
New York (parent company) , It has the appearance of a wine cooler or a
fruit juice and contains 20% alcohol by volume (40 proof) . A 375 ml.
bottle (approximately 12 oz . ) contains the equivalent of five shots of
80 proof vodka. Because of its appearance and its high alcohol content,
this product poses a serious public health danger. Consumption of two
375 ml . bottles of Cisco within one hour by a person weighing 100 pounds
or less may cause death due to acute alcohol poisoning.
