Approval of Contract Amendment Agreement 426-188-1 with
SUBJECT:
Vallejo Temporary Services
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I . RECOMMENDED ACTION :
Approve and authorize the Chairman to execute on behalf of the
County, Contract Amendment Agreement . 426-188-1 , effective
September 1 , 1989 with Vallejo Temporary Services to amend
Contract 426-188 (effective June 1 , 1989 - May 31 , 1990) to pro-
vide for an increased level of nursing registry services at
Merrithew Memorial Hospital ands Clinics . This amendment
increases the payment limit of the Contract by $200 , 000 from
$100 ,000 to a new total payment limit of $300 , 000 .
II . FINANCIAL IMPACT :
This contract is funded in the Health Services Department
Enterprise I Budget for 1989-90 through salary savings generated
from vacant Registered Nurse positions .
III . REASONS -FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND :
On July 11 , 1989 , the Board approved Contract 426-188 with
Vallejo Temporary Services to provide for temporary licensed
nursing personnel to assist Merrithew Memorial Hospital and
Clinics during peak loads , temporary absences and emergency
situations . This Contractor provides psychiatric and perinatal
nursing specialties .
Contract 426-188 was executed prior to the Board' s approval of
additional nursing positions for Merrithew Memorial Hospital ,
and use of the Registry in the first two months of the fiscal
year was heavier than anticipated due to the high hospital cen-
sus and the number of babies born at the Hospital . There still
exists a nationwide nursing shortage , and consequently, the
Department anticipates difficulty in recruiting nurses for the
new positions as well as for its other vacant funded. Registgred
Nurse positions . However , the Department is making every effort
to do active recruitment in order to fill the vacant positions
as soon as possible , and to reduce the use of nursing
registries . In the meantime , the Department is requesting
approval of Contract Amendment Agreement #26-188-1 which will
provide sufficient funds so that the contract payment limit is
not exhausted before the end of the contract term.
