SUBJECT: Presentation by Sheriff ' s Department on Narcotics and Drug
Use in Contra Costa County
Sheriff-Coroner Richard K. Rainey provided an overview of the
presentation prepared for the Board by his staff related to the drug
problem in Contra Costa County.
Members of the Sheriff ' s staff explained the various aspects of
the drug problem including how drugs get into the County, the
different types of drugs and who is using them, the problem with
clandestine laboratories, how drug crimes are investigated and
enforcement efforts in the County.
Sheriff Rainey summarized the presentation and emphasized the
need to focus on future efforts to correct drug problems , additional
enforcement, rehabilitation and education.
Supervisor Fanden requested ,cost figures for keeping drug
offenders in jail. She also suggested that before the upcoming drug
summit, members of the Board read the article in a recent National
Geographic Magazine on cocaine trafficking.
Members of the Board expressed their thanks and appreciation to
Sheriff Rainey and members of his staff for the presentation.
