Approve the attached tentative schedule for Drug Summit I except for the following suggested changes. 2 . Remove this item as a referral to our Committee. BACKGROUND: On December 6, 1988, the Board of Supervisors approved a report from our Committee on the status of planning for Drug Summit I and asked the Steering Committee to report back to our Committee on January 9, 1989. On January 9, 1989, our Committee met with Mike Gilbert from the State Department of Justice and members of the Steering Committee to review the attached proposed program for Drug Summit I . We are in general agreement with the proposed program, but would like to see the following taken into account in the preparation of the final program: 1 . In the portion of the program dealing with "Law Enforcement and the Drug Problem" we believe that some city involvement is needed and that Mike Gilbert needs to be involved to bring the State perspective to law enforcement' s role in the drug problem. 2 . We urge the Steering Committee to find time on the program to highlight successful programs which are currently underway to address the drug problem in the County. We strongly suggest that the community feedback portion of the program which is currently scheduled' from 3 : 00 P.M. to 3 : 30 P.M. be extended to a full hour in order to insure that there is time for adequate_ input from the community. 4 . It will be important to have recorders available for the community feedback portion of the program in order to capture all of the ideas which come from the community. 5 . Mike Gilbert' s ideas for follow-up to the conference should be referred to the Steering Committee to consider along with the rest of the planning for the regional conferences and Drug Summit II . We believe that the involvement of the entire community is . essential -in order to provide a sound basis for arriving at a consensus as to what is needed in order to successfully attack the drug problem in Contra Costa County in an effective and creative manner. The presence of several prominent speakers on the program will bring a great deal of valuable factual information, experience and ideas to the conference. But, it will be up . to the community to decide what to do with those ideas. It is essential that we bring together all elements of the community to determine what dedication, resources and commitment we have which can undertake new and innovative ways of addressing the drug problem in this County. cc: County Administrator , District 'Attorney Sheriff-Coroner Health Services Director Social Services Director County Probation Officer Joe Goglio, Chair, HSAC Stu McCullough, Mental Health Director Chuck Deultschman, Drug Program Chief Mike Gilbert, Department .of Justice Michael Radetsky, United Way Drug Abuse Board Alcoholism Advisory Board George Johnson, Staff, HSAC ;CONTRA COSTA COUNTY - DRUG SUMMIT I Saturday, February 4, 1989 St. Mary's College - LeFevre Theatre St. Mary's Road Moraga, CA 8:30 a.m. . . . . . . . .
