At 12: 30 p.m. this day the Board met with representatives of
School Boards and school district administrative staffs at 595
Center Avenue, 2nd floor conference room, Martinez.
Jerry Nava, Chief, Alcohol Program Administration, provided an
update on the alcohol tax initiative. He advised that should the
initiative pass, it is anticipated that $800 million in revenue
will be collected statewide with Contra Costa County receiving
approximately $16 to $18 million annually. He spoke on the need
for a dedicated volunteer effort that will be used to collect the
over one million signatures required for the initiative to qualify
for the June 1990 ballot.
Sheri Cramer spoke about the serious and growing problem with
the abuse of alcohol and other drugs in Contra Costa County and of
the need to secure the support and cooperation of all levels of
government and society to deal with this problem. She referred to
the proposed "Countywide Drug and Alcohol Action Plan" and the role
of schools in this endeavor. Ms. Cramer commented on the
Countywide Drug Summit which will be held on January 30 - 31, 1990.
Claude Van Mar ter, Assistant County Administrator, suggested
that the participants at this meeting review the proposed draft
plan and submit their comments to him before December 31, 1989. He
advised that the Board' s Internal Operations Committee is scheduled
to review the comments at its January 8, 1990 meeting.
