SUBJECT: Earthquake Relief Efforts
Cathryn Freitas, Antioch City Councilwoman, commented on
the extent of earthquake damage in the Watsonville area and the
desperate need for assistance to the citizens of that area. She
noted that the most urgent need is for financial assistance.
Stephen Weir, representing the Concord City Council,
advised that the City of Concord has "adopted" the City of
Watsonville. He noted that Concord officials are working with the
Watsonville city officials to coordinate relief efforts and address
the most pressing needs.
Steve Roberti, Central Labor Council, stated that the
labor organizations had contributed both financially and by sending
workers into the Santa Cruz area.
Phil Batchelor, County Administrator, advised that
Contra Costa County has provided the assistance of building
inspectors, law enforcement officers and Social Service workers to
the earthquake damaged areas around the Bay Area, and that the
County is working with other officials to determine where further
assistance might be required. Mr. Batchelor noted that the most
urgent need now is financial assistance, and recommended that a
trust fund be established so that Contra Costa residents could
contribute that way.
