HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 11071989 - S.4 S.� THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this order on November 7, 1989 , by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Powers, Fanden, McPeak, Torlakson NOES: None ABSENT: Supervisor Schroder ABSTAIN: None ------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------ SUBJECT: Earthquake Relief Efforts Cathryn Freitas, Antioch City Councilwoman, commented on the extent of earthquake damage in the Watsonville area and the desperate need for assistance to the citizens of that area. She noted that the most urgent need is for financial assistance. Stephen Weir, representing the Concord City Council, advised that the City of Concord has "adopted" the City of Watsonville. He noted that Concord officials are working with the Watsonville city officials to coordinate relief efforts and address the most pressing needs. Steve Roberti, Central Labor Council, stated that the labor organizations had contributed both financially and by sending workers into the Santa Cruz area. Phil Batchelor, County Administrator, advised that Contra Costa County has provided the assistance of building inspectors, law enforcement officers and Social Service workers to the earthquake damaged areas around the Bay Area, and that the County is working with other officials to determine where further assistance might be required. Mr. Batchelor noted that the most urgent need now is financial assistance, and recommended that a trust fund be established so that Contra Costa residents could contribute that way. After discussion by Board members, IT IS ORDERED that the following actions are APPROVED: 1 . EXPRESSED appreciation to Cathryn Freitas and Stephen Weir for their presentation on the needs of the residents of Watsonville following the October 17, 1989 earthquake; 2. COMMENDED the City of Concord for "adopting" Watsonville and ENDORSED their efforts to assist residents of the area; 3 . COMMENDED County employees from the Building Inspection, Sheriff-Coroner and Social Services Departments who have been involved in a mutual aid program with other Bay Area counties; 4. REQUESTED the County Administrator to look at areas where further mutual aid programs could be used; 5. REQUESTED the County Administrator to work with the City of Concord to determine ways local government could make contributions to relief efforts; 1 6. REQUESTED Cathryn Freitas to bring the matter to the attention of the Mayors ' Conference; 7. AUTHORIZED letter of appreciation to labor organizations for their earthquake relief efforts; and 8. REQUESTED the County Administrator to work with a local bank to establish a trust fund whereby private citizens could contribute to earthquake relief.
