Hoffman, Deputy County Administrator a' DATE: October 4, 1988 SUBJECT: Sacramento Capitol Exhibit Specific Request(s) or Recommendations(s) & Background & Justification RECOMMENDATION Establish an ad hoc Sacramento Exhibit Committee charged with developing a new display case, including funding and authorize the Chairman of the Board to sign a letter inviting participation by the Contra Costa Council and Retired Teachers Associations. FINANCIAL IMPACT The cost of a new exhibit would be $3000 to $5000. As proposed, the Exhibit Committee would be responsible for raising funds necessary to design, fabricate and install the exhibit. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND The Contra Costa County exhibit in Sacramento is over ten years old. Many have commented that it is not a worthy representation of Contra Costa to the hundreds of thousands of visitors to Sacramento each year. Several months ago the Contra Costa Retired Teachers Association volunteered to work with the County on renewing the exhibit. The County Administrator's office has since met with them and the Contra Costa Council to discuss the issue. All agree that the exhibit needs to be replaced. The Council is receptive to sponsoring a fund raising effort for the exhibit; while the Retired Teachers Association are willing to give of their time and energy. Therefore, any further action is dependent upon the Board's authorization and direction. It is proposed that the current committee be officially established and include representatives from the Contra Costa Council, the Retired Teachers Association, County Administrator's office and each of the Board members. The committee would be responsible for fund raising as well as working with a designer on the exhibit itself. It is proposed that the exhibit focus on Contra Costa County as a county of contrast or comparison of today and the past. The Committee could give progress reports as appropriate to the Board of Supervisors. As a first step in progress, a letter from the Board of Supervisors to the Council and Association would be an appropriate vehicle to officially request their assistance in this worthwhile project.
