RESOLUTION"RURAL CRIME PREVENTION MONTH"
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RESOLUTION NO. 88/30
WHEREAS, crime and the fear of crime are no longer problems limited to metropolitan
areas; and
WHEREAS, in recent years rural communities have experienced an increase in criminal
activity; and
WHEREAS, rural crime results in significant economic losses which slow production and
increase the cost of farm operations; and
WHEREAS, effective rural crime prevention programs protect property,thereby deterring
criminal activity;and
WHEREAS, rural crime prevention programs assist identifying and recovering heavy
equipment, cattle, chemicals, commodities, forest products and other goods; and
WHEREAS, the Contra Costa County Sheriff-Coroner's Department has been
recognized as having one of the most comprehensive Rural Crime Prevention programs in
California;and
WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of state and local governments including the Office of
Criminal Justice Planning, the State Attorney General's Office, the State Department of Food
and Agriculture, the State Department of Fish and Game, the State Department of Parks and
Recreation, the California Highway Patrol and local law enforcement;private industry including
the California Farm Bureau Federation.the California Cattlemen's Association,the Agricultural
Council of California, the Construction Industry Crime Prevention Program and the South
Central Farmers Committee; and the Rural Community to cooperate in effective crime
prevention efforts; and
WHEREAS,the California Rural Crime Prevention Task Force will be observing California
Rural Crime Prevention Month during February;
NOW THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa
County that in recognition of the value, purpose and intent of February as California's annual
"RURAL CRIME PREVENTION MONTH',we join the others in support of the worthwhile effort.
