SUBJECT: Approve Submission of Grant Application #29-345 to the National
Cancer Institute , . Division of Research Grants for a Two-Year
Cancer Risk Reduction Project
SPECIFIC REQUEST S) OR RECOMMEM7ATION(S) & BACKGROUND AM JUSTIFICATION
I . RECOMMENDED ACTION :
Approve submission of Grant Application 429-345 to the National
Cancer Institute , Division of Research Grants for a two-year
project for the period July 1 , 1988 through June 30 , 1990 in the
amount of $35 ,000 to reduce cancer risk associated with diet and
lifestyle among low income individuals .
II . FINANCIAL IMPACT :
Approval of this application by the National Cancer Institute
will result in $35 ,000 of federal funding for a two-year Cancer
Risk Reduction Project . No County match is required .
III . REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND:
On March 24 , 1987 the Board approved submission of this applica-
tion to the National Cancer Institute . The Institute requested
by telephone that the application be resubmitted before the end
of December . A copy was forwarded to the National Cancer
Institute , but subject to Board approval .
This application requests federal funding to enable the Child
Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP ) and the Early Periodic
Screening , Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) Programs , in colla-
boration with the local CHDP Medical Provider Network, to imple-
ment a nutrition promotion and prevention program in the health
and community setting to promote optimal nutritional status in
the target population for the reduction of diet-associated
cancer . The target population will be low-income recipients of
CHDP/EPSDT services from 2-21 years of age . Recipients will be
screened through dietary and lifestyle assessments and provided
with education , counseling and follow-up to encourage dietary
changes to increase consumption of fiber and decrease fat con-
sumption in order to reduce the risk of diet-associated cancer .
Six copies of the Board Order should be returned to the
Contracts and Grants Unit for submission to the National Cancer
Institute , Division of Research Grants .
