SUBJECT: Self-Esteem Task Force lJl.
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
BACKGROUND
Accept this progress report on the establishment of a local Task
Force on Self-Esteem.
BACKGROUND
Your Board -has referred to our office a letter from John
Vasconcellos, Chairman, Assembly Ways and Means Committee,
transmitting information relating to the formation of the
California Task Force to Promote Self-Esteem and Personal and
Social Responsibility, and urging the County to create a local
task force on the same subject.
On February 10, 1988, I had a _meeting with several department
heads to discuss alternatives for implementing a local task
force. In lieu of crediting an additional body, it may be
feasible to assign self-esteem activities to an existing advisory
group such as the Youth Services Board, the Consortium of Human
Service Agencies or the Family Alliance. Staff is in the process
of discussing this matter with each of these groups. In
addition, departments have been requested to determine what -staff
persons have an interest in working on this program and could
serve as a resource to the task force.
An initial activity of the task force should be to take inventory
of existing county programs and services which impact on raising
the level of self-esteem and personal worth. This can best be
accomplished by drawing on the knowledge of staff and advisory
groups currently working in the human service program area.
A meeting is scheduled for March 16, 1988 to review the
information gathered from the advisory groups and departments and
to formulate recommendations to your Board.
