Request the Health Services Director to determine which individuals in the federal and state governments should be approached about participating financially in the prospective study of the incidence of cancer, and report back to the 1989 Internal Operations Committee on this matter, and more generally on the status of the study, in June, 1989. 2 . Refer oversight on this issue to the 1989 Internal Operations Committee for periodic report to the Board of Supervisors. 3 . Remove this item as a referral to our Committee. BACKGROUND- Throughout 1988 our Committee has been following the prospective study of the incidence of cancer in Contra Costa County and follow-up activities to the very successful Bay Area Cancer Summit which was held last spring. In this, our Committee' s final status report on this subject, we would like to note that Dr. Wendel Brunner has reported to us that the Bay Area Cancer Coalition is meeting on a regular basis and has organized into three major committees: the Nutrition Committee, Tobacco Committee, and Epidemiological Committee. The Epidemiological Committee is trying to develop funding from the National Cancer Institute to study cancer trends in the Bay Area. We have asked Dr. Brunner to determine at what level in the National Cancer Institute decisions on funding are made and let the 1989 Internal Operations Committee know who needs to be contacted about . providing funding for such a study. Dr. Brunner also noted that the Tumor Registry is continuing to gather data although they do not generally publish or otherwise use the data they are gathering. This data does present a valuable resource for research purposes. Dr. Brunner noted that there is a great deal of disagreement among the professionals as to what the correct approach is to this type of study. Dr. Brunner is continuing to focus on the development of the data base and continues to remind the state and federal governments and the academic community that the public and private sectors in Contra Costa County are interested in participating in such a prospective study. Dr. Brunner has become active in many organizations at the State level which are addressing the problems of cancer in the Bay Area and continues to press them for agreement on the process which should be used and on the need for financial support to conduct a study once agreement is reached on the process which should be followed. We believe that the 1989 Internal Operations Committee should continue to receive periodic status reports from the Health Services Department on this issue so they can, in turn, keep the Board up-to-date on developments.
