Acknowledge leadership position taken by Board of Supervisors directing staff to work with the Private/Public Executive Council to: a. Develop a video presentation "Building a Durable Family in a Troubled World"; and b. Produce a book entitled Raising Parents - Nine Powerful Principles designed to assist in strengthening families. 2. Authorize the Chairman of the Board to participate with the Private/Public Executive Council at the annual conference of the Family Alliance of Contra Costa on November 19, 1988, Sheraton Hotel, Concord. a. Preview new video "Building a Durable Family in a Troubled World" - and b. Relelase new publication Raising Parents - Nine Powerful Prinlciples. 3 . Direct staff to identify appropriate areas of county programs and operations for presentation and distribution of the video and book. Authorize the County Administrator to provide for the sale and distribution of the video presentation and book, including the distribution of appropriate promotional copies. 4. Approve an appropriation adjustment in the amount of $14,000 providing for the receipt of revenue from the Private-Public Executive Council to pay for the production of the video presentation and initial printing run for the book and establishing a $10,000 revolving fund to provide for future printings as appropriate. Washington, Jr. , General Manager, Dow Chemical U.S.A. 6 . Declare November 20-26, 1988 as "Family Week in Contra Costa County. " BACKGROUND The Family Alliance of Contra Costa, a non-profit corporation formed in 1986 by the Board off Supervisors and County Board of Education to strengthen families, is presenting its second annual conference "Strengthening the Family in Today' s World-II" on November 19, 1988 at the Sheraton Hotel, Concord. At the Alliance' s first conference a need was identified to make help available to parents to meet the constantly and rapidly changing conditions in todayl' s troubled world. The Private/Public Executive Council took a first step to meet that need through the production of a 15-minute video called "Building a Durable Family in a Troubled World. " This video states the condition of the world as we see it, and a basis for that condition, the deterioration of the basic building block of our nation - the family unit. The second half of the video illustrates some ideas which may be of value to parents in coping with today' s world. To more fully explain the concepts in the video and to be used as a reminder and reference after seeing the video, an original book "Raising Parents - Nine Powerful Principles" has been published by the Executive Council and will be provided free of charge to parents. Both the video and book will be previewed at the Conference which is open to the public. We ask that the Board authorize its Chairman to join members of the Council and Family Alliance Board of Directors in previewing this video and releasing the book at the Conference. Finally, we request that the Board demonstrate its recognition of the family as the basis for any free and orderly society by declaring the week of November 20726, 1988 as "Family Week in Contra Costa County. " During that week all residents are requested to join together with their family members to strengthen their home life through devotion, love and understanding. All service clubs, community organizations and churches are urged to focus attention on family solidarity.
