HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10061987 - S.5 5 ' THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on October 6, 1987 by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Powers, Fanden, Schroder, Torlakson, McPeak NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None --------------------- SUBJECT: Earthquake Preparedness Phil Batchelor, County Administrator, gave a brief oral report on the recent earthquake in the Los Angeles area. He commented on the training programs that County officials have attended during the past year. He stated that an earthquake preparedness video has been produced and shown over local cable television and information brochures have been distributed in schools throughout the County. Mr. Batchelor advised that a symposium designed to educate the public on what to do in the event of an earthquake was held in Central County in April, and requests have been received to hold the syposium in other areas of the County. He noted that overcoming public apathy is a major challenge, since the public is not too interested. in earthquake preparedness until an earthquake occurs. After discussion by Board Members, IT IS ORDERED that the following actions are APPROVED: 1. REQUESTED County Administrator and Office of Emergency Services to conduct evening or week-end symposiums on earthquake preparedness in East and West ° County before the end of the year; 2. DIRECTED that the cable television stations and Channel 42 be requested to show the video tape "It' s Up to You" in the near future; and 3 . REQUESTED the County Administrator to develop a County- wide distribution program for the Office of Emergency Services earthquake preparedness brochure.
