SUBJECT: Earthquake Preparedness
Phil Batchelor, County Administrator, gave a brief oral
report on the recent earthquake in the Los Angeles area. He
commented on the training programs that County officials have
attended during the past year. He stated that an earthquake
preparedness video has been produced and shown over local cable
television and information brochures have been distributed in
schools throughout the County. Mr. Batchelor advised that a
symposium designed to educate the public on what to do in the event
of an earthquake was held in Central County in April, and requests
have been received to hold the syposium in other areas of the
County. He noted that overcoming public apathy is a major
challenge, since the public is not too interested. in earthquake
preparedness until an earthquake occurs.
After discussion by Board Members, IT IS ORDERED that
the following actions are APPROVED:
1. REQUESTED County Administrator and Office of Emergency
Services to conduct evening or week-end symposiums on
earthquake preparedness in East and West ° County before
the end of the year;
2. DIRECTED that the cable television stations and Channel
42 be requested to show the video tape "It' s Up to You"
in the near future; and
3 . REQUESTED the County Administrator to develop a County-
wide distribution program for the Office of Emergency
Services earthquake preparedness brochure.
