HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09081987 - 1.17 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Proclaiming) October 10 and 11, 1987 as ) RESOLUTION NO. 87/536 New Americans Weekend in ) Contra Costa County ) Over 100,000 immigrants and refugees live within the Contra Costa County. Some 35,000 live in Central Costa County. The Center for New Americans was opened in late 1983 by a group of concerned citizens of Contra Costa to serve as a grass roots organization where immigrants and refugees could receive needed services and help one another in their transition to a new country and culture. Through June, 1987, over 3,000 have received multi-lingual and cross-cultural services. The Center has also assisted with interpretation services. Through community education, the sensitivity and understanding of the general public regarding the characteristics and needs of the New Americans have been raised. In addition to periodic cross-cultural workshops and conferences; fifteen different ethnic groups represented in Contra Costa County have been honored in a series of ethnic luncheons. Over twenty groups shared their arts, crafts, dance and music at the First Annual Ethnic Festival in 1986. The Center is commemorating the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution in a most unique way .this year by celebrating cultural diversity through its Second Ethnic Festival, "Passport to America," Saturday, October 10th at Todos Santos Plaza in Concord with the Awards Dinner on October 11th at the Sheraton Hotel, Concord. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors that October 10 and 11, 1987 be proclaimed as New Americans Weekend in Contra Costa County. PASSED AND ADOPTED on September 8, 1987 by a unanimous vote of the Board. I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of an order entered on the minutes of said Board of Supervisors on September 8, 1987 .
