CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
In the Matter of Proclaiming)
October 10 and 11, 1987 as ) RESOLUTION NO. 87/536
New Americans Weekend in )
Contra Costa County )
Over 100,000 immigrants and refugees live within the Contra
Costa County. Some 35,000 live in Central Costa County.
The Center for New Americans was opened in late 1983 by a group
of concerned citizens of Contra Costa to serve as a grass roots
organization where immigrants and refugees could receive needed
services and help one another in their transition to a new
country and culture.
Through June, 1987, over 3,000 have received multi-lingual and
cross-cultural services. The Center has also assisted with
interpretation services. Through community education, the
sensitivity and understanding of the general public regarding the
characteristics and needs of the New Americans have been raised.
In addition to periodic cross-cultural workshops and
conferences; fifteen different ethnic groups represented in
Contra Costa County have been honored in a series of ethnic
luncheons. Over twenty groups shared their arts, crafts, dance
and music at the First Annual Ethnic Festival in 1986.
The Center is commemorating the Bicentennial of the United States
Constitution in a most unique way .this year by celebrating
cultural diversity through its Second Ethnic Festival, "Passport
to America," Saturday, October 10th at Todos Santos Plaza in
Concord with the Awards Dinner on October 11th at the Sheraton
Hotel, Concord.
