Phillip "Phil" Denofrio
Playfield
WHEREAS Phil Denofrio was employed by the Probation
Department on February 27 , 1974 as a group counselor. From the
date of his employment to June, 1990 he served as a transportation
officer, responsible for transporting juveniles to court and
placement, and returning youths from court and from other
counties. On June 4, 1990 Phil Denofrio was selected to serve as
a placement diversion counselor. In this role he assisted in
stemming the tide of juveniles in out of home placement; and
WHEREAS Mr. Denofrio died of a massive heart attack on
July 15, 1990 at the age of 42; and
WHEREAS during his entire service to the County and in
each of his assignments, Mr. Denofrio was regarded by his
supervisors and peers as an outstanding employee of unbridled
zeal. His enthusiasm for his work was contagious and positively
influenced all those who came in contact with him, including his
co-workers, residents, parents of court wards and the Juvenile
Court Referees; and
WHEREAS Mr. Denofrio regarded his transportation
assignment to be a great opportunity to influence minors and he
seized the opportunity to counsel with the young people as he
drove them from one place to another. Many of the residents did
not wish to go where he was required to take them, but in his calm
deliberate manner he was able to persuade them to do what was
right and appropriate. He had the facility to make his complex
assignments seem easy to observers; and
WHEREAS Mr. Denofrio' s genuineness, his concern for
everyone, his compassion and his competence earned the total
respect of all with whom he came in contact. He was publicly
recognized as the Contra Costa County Juvenile Facility Employee
of the Year in 1987 for his many contributions; and
WHEREAS Mr. Denofrio loved sports. He participated in a
variety of sporting events including baseball, volleyball and
basketball. In fact he suffered his heart attack while playing
basketball. In addition he served as a coach for youth groups in
the community and used his interest in sports as a vehicle to
establish meaningful relationships with the young people;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, in recognition of Mr.
Denofrio's dedication to his work and his competence, zeal and
ability to establish meaningful relationships with juveniles
through the medium of sports, that the playfield at Juvenile Hall
be named the Phillip "Phil" Denofrio Playfield in his memory.
PASSED and ADOPTED BY THE BOARD on August 28, 1990.
