In the Matter of Commending )
the E1 Sobrante Art Guild ) Resolution No. : 90/ 550
For Their Many Years of
Community Support
WHEREAS in 1968 Elizabeth Grant, El Sobrante Librarian
encouraged local artists to display their paintings in the
library, and Mr. Ralph Huston, a prominent painter visiting
from New York - also encouraged them to form a group; and
WHEREAS an ad was placed in the Richmond Independent
newspaper for all interested persons to meet at Olinda
Elementary school for an out door art festival. This being
E1 Sobrante's first art festival with local artists
teachers and students all partaking in the event) ; and
WHEREAS In April, 1969 the first organized meeting took
place at the house of Thelma Hester. The first officers were
Hazel Watne, first President; Pearl Johnson, Public
Relations; Mary Forbes, Treasurer; Thelma Hester, Membership
chairperson; and many charter members, (145 the first year) ;
and
WHEREAS The art guild arranges to hang paintings in fifteen
area businesses, bank offices and regularly exhibits in the
El Sobrante and Pinole libraries; and
WHEREAS an annual winetasting fine arts festival and auction
is held at the Mechanics Bank in El Sobrante, and an Annual
Christmas arts and crafts sale is held for three weeks in
December - plus many outdoor festivals throughout the year;
and
WHEREAS the guild takes 10% of the sales and uses these
funds to support community services, including donations to
the E1 Sobrante Senior Citizens, B1 Sobrante Boys Club, YMCA
Ramp for Rids, memorials, certificates and cash awards in
the Richmond Unified School District Students Art Exhibit.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
of the County of Contra Costa, California, hereby COMMENDS
the E1 Sobrante Art Guild for over twenty-one years of
service to the community and EXTENDS its best wishes for
many years to come.
Passed and adopted on August 21, 1990, by unanimous vote of
the Board members present.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and current
copy of a resolution entered in the minutes of the Board of
Supervisors on the date aforesaid.
