HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 10091990 - 90/656IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA IN THE MATTER OF PRESENTING THE EAGLE FLIGHT AVIATION RESOLUTION NO. 90/ 6 5 6 EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD TO JIM MCDONALD Governor George Deukmejian has declared the week of October 7-13, 1990 as Aviation-Aerospace Week in California. The goal of Aviation-Aerospace Week is to increase public awareness of the regional,state,and national benefits of the aviation industries. This is being done through various State-sponsored programs. One such State-sponsored program,of which Buchanan Field Airport is actively involved,is Eagle Flight. The primary purpose of the Eagle Flight Program is to bring classroom teachers and airport managers together in an effort to introduce aviation-aerospace into the classroom. The Contra Costa County Eagle Flight Team includes Airport stat%Mt Diablo School District teachers, airport businesses and flying associations. Jim McDonald was selected by a committee from the Contra Costa County Eagle Flight Team as the recipient of the Outstanding Aviation Educator of the Year Award for his energetic leadership role in aviation for . Contra Costa County. Among Jim's many contributions, the Selection Committee listed the following as representative of his achievements: Jim was a key member and one of the original organizers for the development of the Statewide Eagle Flight Program. Jim was a key participant in coordinating the first Contra Costa County Introductory Eagle Flight. This Introductory event, held on May 12, 1990, consisted of an airplane flight over Contra Costa County and a ground tour of the Airport. Thanks to his dedication and hard work, this event was a huge success. Jim was one of the organizers of the Space Week and Science Fair for Wren Avenue Elementary School. This program brought together speakers from NASA, Contra Costa County Airports, and Travis Air Force Base, to familiarize students with the different forms aviation science could take. The students produced over ninety entries in the Science Fair, including class projects. Jim led his students in a community service project to raise funds for the Mt Diablo Astronomical Society to build an observatory on Mt Diablo. This highly commendable effort raised 5200. Jim regularly takes his students on various aviation-aerospace related field trips. Most noteworthy was when he took a group of students to NASA's Space Camp and Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama Because of his tireless dedication to the advancement of aviation sciences,the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors would like to recognize Jim McDonald's efforts by designating him as Contra Costa County's Outstanding Aviation Educator of the Year.' In addition to recognition by the Board of Supervisors, the Contra Costa Airports Business Association will be donating three hours of flight instruction to Jim. This year the flight instruction is donated"by Navajo Aviation. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors presents the Eagle Flight Aviation Educator of the Year Award to Jim McDonald.
