INFECTION CONTROL COORDINATOR
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, conducts a systematic surveillance program to
identify and report hospital acquired (nosocanial) infections; recommends poli-
cies and procedures to control the spread of such infections; provides advice
and direction to others on infection control issues; performs related work as
required.
DISTTGUISHING CKARACTFRISTICS
This single position management class is located in the Hospital and
Clinics Division of the Health Services Department. It is identified as a staff
position specializing in the control of infectious diseases in an acute care
hospital setting. The incunbent also assists nursing administration by facili-
tating the resolution of employee health issues relating to prevention of or
exposure to infection or contagious diseases, followup on medical leave of
absence issues and management of limited duty assisgnments. These latter
dueties entail a liaison role with the Department's health and safety officer.
This position reports to the Associate Hospital Executive Director -
Patient Care.
TYPICAL TASKS
Receives and reviews hospital culture sensitivity and other laboratory
reports to identify possible reportable diseases and forwards said reports to
the proper authorities; by observing the patient care and use of the equipment,
monitors precautions/isolation procedures used by hospital staff to reduce
chances of infection; collects, tabulates and analyzes data regarding nosocomial

infections and reports findings to administration, the Infection Control
Camnittee and the medical staff; maintains close canmunications with hospital
supervisors and a physician epidemiologist regarding infection control issues by
attending regularly scheduled meetings and consulting on a case by case basis;
forcasts infectious disease problems and.regulatory canplianee by reviewing
current literatre and accrediting agency guidelines; recanmends and/or develops
infection control policies and procedures in conformance with hospital industry
standards; helps interpret, implement and ensure canpliance with policies and
standards once developed; chairs the Hospital Infection Control Camnittee and
makes recanmendations to the New Products Camnittee to enhance infection
control; participates in the orientation and training of hospital and clinic
personnel on such topics as infection control procedures, personal hygiene tech-
niques and the required reporting of camnunicable diseases; acts as technical
advisor to staff on infection control issues; makes recamnendations for
budgetary expenditures to enhance the infection control progran; in collabora-
tion with a physician epidemiologist, assists in investigating suspected
outbreaks of camnunicable diseases among patients or employees; administers organi-
zational Hepatitis R and TR screening prograns; in consultation with the
Department's %ployee Health and Safety Officer, assists in managing medical
leaves of absence, limited duty assigrments, and the employee health examination or
work connected injury treatment program; participates in professional organiza-
tions such as the Association of Practitioners in Infection Control (APIC) to
keep abreast of new development in the field.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
License Required: Possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse in
the state of California.
Experience: Two ,years of fulltime experience or its equivalent as a
Registered Nurse in an acute care hospital.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of acute care nursing principles, methods and camnonly used
procedures; knowledge of modern infection control principles and techniques;
knowledge of medical-terminology, hospital routine and camnonly used equipment;
knowledge of hospital organization and the interrelationships of various clini-
cal and diagnostic services; knowledge of medical staff organization including
the roles and responsibilities of physician camnittees; knowledge of fundamental
statistics; ability to gather and analyze data and prepare reports based
thereon; ability to teach coworkers modern infection control measures; ability
to prcmote acceptance of infection control measures in a tactful manner that
pranotes cooperation; ability to camnunicate effectively orally and in writing;
ability to get along with physicians, nurses and other health care
professionals.
