DATA PROCESSING TECHNICAL WRITER
DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, to develop and publish written procedures
manuals and directives for the various county computer systems; to provide
technical direction and training to user personnel in line departments; and to
do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Incumbents in this class are responsible for the evaluation of
documentation for county-wide departmental automated systems, and the
development and publication of procedures manuals for these various
departmental systems.
The class of Data Processing Technical Writer is distinguished from
professional data processing programmer and analyst classes where the work
emphasis is on technical programming and/or systems analysis; further
distinguished from the class of Law and Justice Technical Writer - Project that
has very similar duties and responsibilities, but works exclusively with
departments in the Law and Justice System.
TYPICAL TASKS:
Reviews technical documentation describing the functions and
programming of computer systems for accuracy and completeness; interprets work
directives and assesses the level of user knowledge to determine the writing
style and detail appropriate for the procedures manual ; maintains records of
user manuals and updates manuals to reflect systems changes as necessary; may
be assigned to do systems documentation on a major project, including
preparation of data flow charts and systems binders; may provide technical
assistance to computer terminal operators and assisting with the training of
user personnel in the use of computer terminals; as needed, may prepare reports
and correspondence regarding project status and priorities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
License Required: Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's
License.
Education: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited
college or university with a major in English, journalism or a closely related
field.
Experience: Two years of full-time or its equivalent experience in
the development of computer-oriented user manuals, forms analysis and graphics
layout.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted
for the required education on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Good knowledge of and skills in proper English construction and
usage; knowledge of editing procedures; working knowledge of computer
programming; ability to accurately gather, record and effectively evaluate
computer terminal operations data; ability to develop and write clear and
concise computer-oriented user procedures manuals; ability to instruct user
personnel in the operation of computer terminals; ability to communicate
effectively both orally and in writing; ability to work effectively with other
staff and user departmental personnel .
