SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION S ) & BACKGROUND AM JUSTIFICATION
I . RECOMMENDED ACTION :
Approve and authorize the Board Chair to sign, on behalf of the
County, an application by the Health Services Department ' s
Prevention Program for an Innovations in State and Local
Government Award from the Ford Foundation in conjunction with
the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
II . FINANCIAL IMPACT :
Selection of the Prevention Program as one of ten recipients of
an Innovations in State and Local Government Award could result
in a grant of $100 , 000 from the Ford Foundation in the fall of
1988 . No County funding is required .
III . REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND :
In 1985 , the Ford Foundation , in conjunction with the John F.
Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, established
an awards program for exemplary innovations in &tate and local
government. This program provides national recognition and
financial awards to states and localities which have experi-
mented successfully with innovative approaches which solve
difficult government problems and improve the quality of life
for their citizens . The goal of the Awards Program is to iden-
tify and publicize particular initiatives that exemplify
creative thinking about government , sound managerial approaches
to encouraging innovation , and program activities worthy of
transfer and replication .
Preliminary applications for the third year of the awards
program must be submitted by January 8 , 1988 . Approximately
seventy-five applicants will be chosen by March 1 and invited to
complete a more extensive application . A group of finalists
will be chosen during the spring . The Foundation will formally
present the awards to the ten selected recipients in the fall of
1988 .
The Board Chair should sign eight copies of the application,
seven of which should be returned to the Contracts and Grants
Unit for submission to the Ford Foundation/Harvard University.
