HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 07282015 - C.36RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a Library Services and Technology Act grant in the amount of $5,000 from the California State Library to provide cultural programs and library materials at the Concord Library for the period October 1, 2015 through March 31, 2016. FISCAL IMPACT: No Library Fund match. BACKGROUND: The Concord Library "Culture, Community and Connection" program series will highlight the Latino culture. The series will begin with a Dia de los Muertos celebration at the beginning of November. The series will continue in subsequent months with performances by bilingual storytellers and visits from Latino authors. Other programs will include histories and traditions such as the history of cocoa and the tradition of the Quinceanera, a coming of age celebration for Latin girls. The primary audience for the programs will be adults and families. The project will include the addition of materials to the library's collection, both English and Spanish, focusing on Latino culture. Programs and materials in the project relate directly to the Contra Costa County Library Strategic Plan 2014-2017 objective to expand services to underserved populations in each community. Planned programs will expand upon the cultural offerings of the Concord Library and will engage current users as well as those new to library services. It is administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the California State Library. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: If the funds are not received then the cultural programs will not occur and library materials will not be acquired. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: The Concord Library "Culture, Community and Connections" program series meets the Children's Report Card outcome of Communities that are Safe and Provide a High Quality of Life for Children and Families. Programs presented will bring families and adults to the library thereby introducing the library to those who have not used a library before. Latino children attending the programs will reinforce their heritage, while non-Latino children will feel more connected to their neighbors. The community will experience increased cultural diversity and literacy through the addition of new library materials adults and children.
