FIELD SAVE April 26, 2015
CCCFPD units were dispatched to a kitchen fire in Concord. Prior to
arrival, dispatchers reported a possible victim with smoke inhalation
and PD requested AMR. Engine 11 arrived and reported one male on
the stairs, pulseless, with agonal breathing and severe cyanosis. Fire
crews moved the patient to flat ground and started CPR. He was
quickly placed on the cardiac monitor and found to be in pulseless V-
fib. Firefighter-medic Scott Mullin delivered a shock. The patient
converted into normal sinus rhythm with pulses but then went back
into V-fib as he was being loaded into the AMR unit for transport. He
was quickly shocked again and converted to SVT with strong pulses.
While being transported to the hospital, the patient woke up, became
alert, and began to recall the events. Upon arrival at the ER, the
patient was alert and stable with good vitals.
He was taken to the cardiac cath lab from the ER and then emergency
transferred to Kaiser SF where he underwent successful open heart
surgery. He has recently been discharged and is expected to make a
full recovery.

I received a phone call from Elizabeth. She wanted to relay an
incident that occurred on February 15, 2015. Elizabeth found her
husband unresponsive and not breathing. She immediately called
911. The CCCFPD dispatcher, Janin Campbell, insisted that
Elizabeth perform CPR on her husband and coached her through it
until first responders arrived. Elizabeth’s husband survived. The
doctors said the outcome would have been different had CPR not
been started immediately.
