RE: Fire Chief’s Report
____________________________________________________________________________
The District solicited and heard proposals from ambulance companies who were interested
in partnering with us for the upcoming ambulance transport contract. AMR was chosen as
the company who provided the most benefit to the District and the communities we serve.
The District and AMR managers have come to a tentative agreement and will develop a
proposal for the County ambulance RFP due May 21, 2015.
The District continues to work collaboratively with the Sheriff’s Office on joint marine and
air operations. Four of the District’s firefighters will attend a class in May to train on hoisting
victims from remote areas using a technique called “short haul.” These four firefighters will
become trainers for additional firefighters to learn the skill later in the year.
The District is in the process of recruiting firefighters, firefighter‐paramedics, captains,
battalion chiefs, and civilian fire inspectors. We are meeting with County Human Resources
staff monthly to stay on top of this heavy workload.
Academy 48 is in process and is scheduled to graduate in May adding 10 new firefighters to
the District ranks. Academy 49 will begin late 2015.
The District did an external search for Assistant Chief of Operations. Four separate interview
panels unanimously chose our internal candidate, Lon Goetsch, as the top candidate.
The San Pablo squad program is moving forward. The proposed implementation date
remains May 1. The build project to expand Fire Station 70 to accommodate the additional
firefighters is underway.
Captain Rob Smith and Captain Chris Allen both retired this month after 26 and 27 years of
service respectively. Senior Dispatcher Cynthia Simonetti also retired after 33 years in public
safety dispatching – over 14 years with the District and the remainder in law enforcement. I
want to congratulate and thank them for their contribution to the citizens of Contra Costa
County.
