APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of
$4,400 from 3D Systems MakerLab Club to provide four Cube 3D printers and software for the period January 5,
2015 through January 5, 2016.
FISCAL IMPACT:
$2,400 County match, Library Fund.
BACKGROUND:
3D Systems, in collaboration with the American Library Association and the Association of Science and Technology
Centers, is committed to expanding young people’s access to 21st century tools that can help them learn and create,
including 3D design, scanning and printing. The MakerLab Club is a community of U.S. libraries and museums
committed to advance 3D digital literacy and provide their members and communities with access to 3D printers and
programs. 3D Systems will donate 3D printers to select museums and libraries across the country who join the
MakerLab Club and establish access to 3D printing and design opportunities for their communities. The receipt of
this grant will allow all Contra Costa County Library users the opportunity to learn about and utilize 3D printing and
scanning technologies. 3D printing “maker” laboratories are opening in libraries and learning institutions all over the
United States. 3D printing complements the Library’s emphasis on providing STEAM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, the Arts, and Math) programming and satisfies the following strategic objectives:

Subject:Grant for Four Cube 3D printers from 3D Systems MakerLab Club
BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
1) Explore and implement technology to enhance the customer experience; and 2) Increase opportunities for literacy
and lifelong learning. Participants and partners will work with Contra Costa County staff to build, create, and explore
this new technology. Four 3D printers will be available for use at all 26 of the Contra Costa County Libraries on a
traveling-in-a-box basis.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
The Library will not participate in the MakerLab Club grant.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
1) Children Ready for and Succeeding in School: Children will have opportunities to explore 3D printer technology,
which expands opportunities for academic success and creative exploration. 2) Communities that are Safe and
Provide a High Quality of Life for Children and Families: Children and families will have access to a technology that
provides repeated learning opportunities delivered at the Library, which further expands opportunities for access to
resources delivered through related online materials.
