APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment and Human Services Director, or designee, to apply for and accept
funding from Share our Strength in the amount of $200 for Cooking Matters at the Store program for the period
November 1, 2014 through December 31, 2014.

BACKGROUND:
The National Head Start Association partnered with Share Our Strength to connect young children to healthy food by
offering "Cooking Matters at the Store" mini-grants to reach Head Start families. "Cooking Matters at the Store" is an
interactive grocery store tour that teaches families to shop for healthy, affordable food as part of the No Kids Hungry
campaign, working to connect kids at risk of hunger in America with the healthy food they need

every day. Participants learn to find whole grains, buy fruits and vegetables on a budget, compare unit prices and read
food labels. EHSD Community Services Bureau will use the funds to support grocery store tours to 20 participants
during the grant term.
The mini-grant of $200 will assist Head Start program to facilitate interactive tours for up to 20 people.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
Without funding, Share our Strength Cooking Matters at the Store program will not be implemented by EHSD
Community Services Bureau.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
The grant will support two of the community outcomes established in the Children's Report Card: 2) "Children and
Youth Healthy and Preparing for Productive Adulthood" and 4) "Families that are Safe, Stable and Nurturing" by
providing nutritional information and encouragement to families for healthy lifestyles.
