RE: Fire Chief’s Report
____________________________________________________________________________
The District is seeking a consultant to assist with the preparation of a proposal for
the ambulance transport contract. Proposals are due back to the District in early
November.
The District continues to work on the development of specifications for new fire
engines and ladder trucks. The intent is to have the specifications completed and
ready for Board review in early December. We anticipate the purchase of 5 -6 fire
engines, 2 ladder trucks, and a new rescue truck. The specifications have been
developed by a committee of firefighters and my recommendation will be to
acquire the apparatus through a lease purchase program. The addition of these
apparatus will provide some much needed relief for an aging fleet.
The District has completed legal and peer review of the ordinance to receive
reimbursement for the delivery of medical care by our licensed healthcare
practitioners. The District will present this ordinance next month to the Board for
consideration. As a reminder, this ordinance will allow the District to collect
reimbursement from insurance providers for services rendered at emergency
medical incidents. Implementing this ordinance will also enable the District to
collect fees from the federal government when a new program is implemented
later this year. It is important to remember that costs recovered via this ordinance
will be from insurance providers and/or the federal government, not individuals. It
is anticipated that the District will recover $1 million in reimbursement.
Academy 47 started on October 13 with 14 candidates. It is anticipated that the
academy will graduate in early January 2015 , at which time the candidates will
be deployed into the field. The new firefighters will be used to staff additional
resources at that time. Shortly after, Academy 48 will commence to fill any
remaining vacancies so that we can enter the fire season of 2015 fully staffed.

Although wildland fire season in northern California is coming to a close, it is
important to remember that some of the most devastating wildfires in California
occur in fall and early winter. In addition, it is also important to remember that as
we enter the holiday season, the use of candles and decorative lights also
increase the chances of fires in the home and business. We want to remind our
citizens that they still need to be careful to prevent wildfires and structure fires
even though cooler weather has set in. The District has recently experienced
several significant structural fires with significant injuries in the last 30 days.
